Project Title: Vestar / Phoenix Children's Hospital Mural Project

Project Description
Vestar and Phoenix Children's Hospital seek an artist to develop two complimentary mural designs to activate the windows of vacant storefront windows and to encourage shopper engagement with touch style donation panels integrated into the mural (SAACA to provide this technology after mural completion). The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) is seeking experienced and talented visual artists and artist teams to create two signature murals at Desert Ridge Marketplace and Tempe Marketplace. 

This call is open to professional artists, artist teams, and arts organizations working in the visual arts who possess the knowledge, creative, technical expertise and the administrative capacity to complete this project and work with community partners. This program is intended to highlight, encourage and promote local artists by giving them the opportunity to present their artwork publicly.

Successful artists, artist teams or arts organizations must demonstrate the following:

  • Willingness to create consistent artistic vision that reflects local culture as well as established goals for the project.
  • The administrative capacity to oversee and complete the murals during the desired timeline
  • Artist teams who apply must demonstrate both the qualifications of individual team members, as well as the team’s qualifications to work together on projects.
  • Artist’s name and title of artwork will appear on the murals.

  • March 20 - Call to Artist Closes
  • March 26 - Top 3 Artists Notified of Finalist Status
  • April 7 - Finalists Submit Detailed Secondary Mural Design
  • April 10 - Artist Selected
  • April - Mural Installations

Budget
The budget for the mural is $11/Sq Ft and must cover all expenses associated with the concept, implementation, and post-implementation of the commissioned mural project, including design development, production and execution, as well as any required presentations, approvals, and/or sundries. There are no city permits required as this is on private property. The exact location/size of the murals have yet to be determined but will likely range between 300-500 sq ft each. 

Following the first jury round the top three artists will be identified based on their initial submissions and offered a $250 honorarium to complete a secondary design for the mural project.

  • Theme - “C’mon Get Tappy”
  • Inclusion of call to action copy to be included in the mural to encourage a 'tap' donation 
  • Inclusion of Phoenix Children's Hospital colors and hand logo (see images below for brand guidelines)

Guidelines for Art Selection
A public art selection committee will review the applications and high-resolution images, sketches and renderings for consideration.The selection committee will select Art based upon the following considerations:

  • The portfolio submitted includes high quality images that are engaging, positive, and communicate expertise and experience with similar projects.
  • Art submitted for consideration should be able to translate well within a shopping center in Phoenix.

SAACA reserves the right to decline all submissions and retract this call for entries for any reason at any time.

Liability and Publicity Release
The submitted works (collectively or individually referred to as the “Art”) will be evaluated by the committee. Selected Art may receive editing suggestions from the committee.
By submitting Art and submitting an application form, you agree that:

  • You are the sole designer of the Art that is submitted for consideration and that the contents of the Arts are original and do not infringe upon any copyright or intellectual rights of others, and that you have the unencumbered right to make this submission.
  • You grant the involved organizations the right to perpetually use the Art, including, but not limited to: reproduction, posting, displaying, creation of derivative works, or documenting the work in any media or in any form, now known or later invented, without limitation for promotional, documentary, celebratory or any other non-commercial purposes. Artist retains copyright of the Art.
  • You have read and agree with all of the terms and conditions of this call for art and hereby absolve the SAACA, Desert Ridge Marketplace or any of the project partners from any claim or loss, either past, present or future, in association with the call for art. The terms of the call for art are binding on the artist, the artist’s successors, assigns, representatives or administrators.

How to Submit
All Applications must be submitted via online application to include:

  • ARTIST CONTACT INFORMATION Include name, business name (if applicable), physical address, mailing address, telephone and email. Teams must identify one artist to be projects primary contact, as well as contact information for all artists on the team. 
  • A STATEMENT OF INTEREST AND ARTWORK CONCEPT  (2-page max if submitted via PDF or DOC format) in creating public art. Successful applicants should include a sample proposal of artwork concept, accompanied by sketch imagery, photography and narrative description of proposed theme and artwork.
  • RESUME or LIST OF COMMISSIONED OR COMPLETED WORKS (PDF or DOC format only, 4 pages max); artist, artist teams or arts organizations must submit a CV for each artist on the team. 
  • UP TO FOUR (4) IMAGES OF PREVIOUS WORKS (JPG or PDF format only, 72 DPI min and 5 MB max per file) of completed artwork; image files must include description of work, title, budget, community agency who commissioned artwork. 

All application materials must be received online by 5 p.m. by March 20, 2020.
